The New Orleans Class Heavy Cruiser

Star Trek New Orleans class Heavy Cruiser

The aftermath of the battle of Wolf 359 on stardate 43989.1 (December 28, 2366)[1], is a treasure trove of star trek ships.[2] These ships only appeared in the background for a single scene but it really shows the creativity and resourcefulness of the design team to create something from nothing. One of those ships was the U.S.S. Kyushu, a New Orleans Class Heavy cruiser. Originally commissioned into service in 2332 as a Frigate[3], the New Orleans class measured 425 meters in length and carried a crew complement of 550. with room for up to 1,600 passengers in an evacuation situation. When it was built, the New Orleans Class was equipped with a weapons package consisting of 8 standard Type 4 phaser arrays covering up to a 720º range and bow and stern type 3 torpedo launchers. During the early stages of the Cardassian War, most of the New Orleans Class vessels were refit to a Heavy Destroyer configuration with the addition of three external torpedo pods, one ventral mount to their existing weapons. Each pod carried an additional 200 torpedoes and was capable of firing 8 torpedoes at a time.[4]
